November 18

Michigan is 1-6 in the Big Ten. The Lions are 1-8 in the NFL. That's 2-14 overall. I doubt the State of Ohio is quaking in its collective boots about this weekend.

Nov 17th

I haven't enjoyed a UM/OSU game since 2003 when the Michigan Stadium crowd was chanting Perry-Perry-Perry for Chris Perry.

I liked almost everything about the 1997 UM/OSU game but I really liked it when Marcus Ray flipped David Boston upside down.

The 96 game was a great win for UM. I have never been more suprised than when Tai Streets went the distance at the Horseshoe after Shawn Springs slipped.

All of these are great moments but in 95 when Tshimanga Biakabutuka broke off a 20 yard plus run on his first carry I knew it was going to be a special day. 313 yards later I knew I would mention that game everytime I had a chance once a year.

I don't like my beer foamy.
I don't like my beer skunky.
I really hate it when my beer is flat.
I like my beer just right.

When I started out in radio in 1994 I told myself that
I wanted to remain a real fan of Detroit sports and
that there were four players that  I just
would never interview.

That player for  the Tigers was Alan Trammell. That went pretty easy seeing that
Tram retired in 1996. I stayed away from Tram when he was manager
of the Tigers too.

Barry Sanders
was the star on the Lions  I stayed away from and never interviewed.
That was pretty easy because scoring an interview with BS was pretty tough.

Never did interview Joe D while he was player but just this year at the
2009 NBA draft my streak was broken when Joe D sat down with Matt Dery
and myself.

Tonight is Steve Yzerman HOF night at the JLA. Yzerman may stop by the concourse
where Pat & I are broadcasting. I think I will let Pat fire the tough questions.

November 11

A Pat Caputo Hat Trick:

1. A Coney.
2. A bag of Better Made chips.
3. A cold can of Faygo Rock And Rye.

November 9

Seems to me many of the same people claiming Michigan's football team is lacking talent are the same people who have been so giddy on national signing day.

November 3

Three tale-tell signs somebody is not from Detroit.

1. They refer to "pop" as "soda."
2. They think there is a South Detroit.
3. They think "The Captain" has more do with "Love Boat" than the Red Wings.

October 28

My dozen greatest players in Pistons History:
1. Isiah Thomas
2. Dave Bing
3. Chauncey Billups
4. Joe Dumars
5. Bob Lanier
6. Dennis Rodman
7. Ben Wallace
8. Bill Laimbeer
9. Richard Hamilton
10. Tayshaun Prince
11. Rasheed Wallace
12. Vinnie Johnson
13. Darko Milicic (just kidding)

Most people don't like Joe Pa because he's old.
I like Joe Pa and think it's cool how old he is.

I do hope this weekend that UM puts a good
Ole fashion whoopin on ole joe.

October 19

Dennis says he felt dirty watching Michigan play Deleware State. Not me. I found it fascinating. It was kind of like the Lions at Green Bay.

Intentional or not by playing Shoelace on Saturday night it helps
keep Devin Gardner committed. If DG was/is having any second
thoughts and you're UM you say,
"The QB that's making plays in a game is the one that plays."

October 11

The best lines ever from country songs:

1. Have you ever seen a robin weep when leaves begin to die. That means he's lost his will to live. I'm so lonesome I could cry. - Hank Williams Sr.

2. My name is Sue. How do you do. NOW YOU'RE GONNA DIE!!!!! - Johnny Cash.

3. If I die before I wake, feed Jake. He's been a good dog. - Pirates of the Mississippi.

October 8

The Tigers are not, in my opinion, handling the Miguel Cabrera situation well. They can't pretend it didn't happen. It did. He did have a .26 blood-alcohol content in the not-that-many hours between two of their biggest games of the 2009 season. His wife did call 911 because she was afraid of him. Tiger fans aren't going to forget it. Seems like there is a problem there. What are Cabrera - because it starts with him - and the Tigers going to do in order to correct it?

Oct 5th

Kirk Cousins and the MSU defense won that game for the Spartans on Saturday.
Too many 3rd and longs converted by Cousins.
UM's running game? Stuffed by a MSU defense that was ready to play.
All that being said, Tate almost pulled it out for UM.
Tate is fun to watch but the rest of this UM team better be ready to show up coming up.
If not there will be a lot more games like Saturday's in East Lansing for UM.

October 4

I not sure if Michigan State played that well as Michigan didn't Saturday in East Lansing. The only reason the game was close was because of Tate Forcier. It was like the Wolverines were a one-man team. And overall, I still think Michigan is a better team than the Spartans. Rich Rodriguez has to be disappointed by that performance. Seemed like the Wolverines have been reading too many of their press clippings.

September 30

Bill Lajoie, the general manager of the 1984 Tigers, hasn't received enough credit. He was the force behind the drafting of Lou Whitaker, Alan Trammell, Kirk Gibson, Jack Morris, Dan Petry, Lance Parrish, Dave Rozema and Tom Brookens - all within a span of a few years. He is the one who made the spring training trade that sealed the deal for the Tigers, getting Willie Hernandez and Dave Bergman from the Phillies. In the same draft, Lajoie selected Trammell and Ozzie Smith. Oh, he also drafted John Smoltz and signed Cecil Fielder from Japan. He has - by far - the greatest baseball mind I've ever been around. Nobody else is even close. No Bill Lajoie, no '84 Tigers.

Sept 28th

First one to 40 wins.
Tate Forcier is the real deal.
A running back combo of Brandon Minor & Carlos Brown is too tough to handle.

Michigan goes to 5-0.

UM 40 MSU 38

I agree with Ken Kal. I'd rather go bowling and drink beer than go bike riding any day of the week - twice on Sunday.

Monday 21st

MSU QB Kirk Cousins can really throw the football and has a nice future in front of him.

I expect first time starters to miss a running back by a little bit late in the game.
I also expect a first time starter to throw that horrible pick like Cousins did late in the game
on the road.

It just makes it that much more impressive when a freshman or first time starter comes through
late in a game like Tate Forcier did a week ago -- although Tate was at home.

Ever get the feeling the Tigers would have a better chance of beating the '27 Yankees or the '61 Yankees or the '98 Yankees than any version of the Kansas City Royals? At Least in a pennant race?

Sept 15th

I love the NFL and all but every year the annoucers on a close play say,
"Well there will have to indisputable video evidence to overturn that call."

After watching Oakland/SD last night it just reminded me that they should say,

"That call will stand unless after watching the replay 100 times the refs find the one angle that may dispute the call and then
they will for sure overturn the call on the field."

September 15

I hated "Dirty Dancing" and "Ghost" did not make me cry, but when Patrick Swayze went down in "Youngblood," it brought a tear to my eye. RIP

September 9

I don't understand what the New Orleans Saints players talking smack about Matthew Stafford are hoping to accomplish. It's not like they have to do - they are overwhelming favorites against the Lions. If the Saints win, it will be expected and their comments forgotten. If it is a close game or an upset, those comments will be tossed back in the face.

Sept 7th

The last time I saw a football player with the speed of shoelace Robinson was
when UM's greatest player of all time played: AC

Back in 68 the Tigers took over 1st place on May 10th.
Go ahead and look to see how long the Tigers have been in 1st place this year.
Oh you don't want to? Ok. May 10th!

September 7

Did you know, none of the teams remaining on the Tigers' schedule currently has an above .500 record? The Tigers had their severe tests at Anaheim and at Tampa Bay. They went a combined 5-1 in those two series. If they win the division, those road series will be viewed as the keys. Thing is, both were under the radar to a degree. The series in Anaheim - because the games were so late. The series in Tampa - because it was Labor Day weekend and the first weekend of college football.

Sept. 1

The Rich Rodriguez plot at Michigan keeps getting thicker by the day. New reports are he is delinquent on a loan payment for a condo project in Virginia. It just keeps adding up. What are the odds of Rich Rod coaching U-M past this season? My best guess is they were really good before the past few days. Now, I’d put them about 50-50. They'll go down much futher if the Wolverines lose to Western Michigan Saturday.

Aug 28th

The listeners were throwing out slogans for this years Tigers team.
Here are the top five:

1. Cardiac cats with the catatonic bats.
2. Love 'em and Leyland.
3 Hey we don't need a hearse we are still in first.
4 Quit your bitchin it's the pitchin.
5. Root for the cats and pray for the bats.

August 25

Dennis yelled at me the other day. He pointed his finger at me and said, "PAT YOU'RE WRONG ABOUT MATTHEW STAFFORD!!! I didn't get mad, though. I just laughed. He was wearing his "Mr. Bubbles" t-shirt at the time. How can you get mad at somebody wearing that?

Florida State coach Bobby Bowden said he thinks Charlie Ward, not Florida's Tim Tebow, was the greatest college quarterback of all-time. He is, of course, wrong. Tebow is better than Ward was back in the day, and is probably the best college QB of all time - when you really think about it. But Ward was definitely a better basketball player than Tebow.

The Tigers offense chokes too much for me to think that they are going to
win the division. I know their pitching from top to bottom is really good but
overall this team doesn't pass the look test.

Do you really believe that "anything can happen" with this team?

I hope they prove me wrong but my gut tells me that this team
won't be there in the end.

August 14

Did you know Justin Verlander is tied with Jeremy Bonderman for the most wins by an active major league pitcher 26 years old or younger with 59. At the same age, Jack Morris had 51 victories. I didn't, at least until Friday night when I looked it up.

July 13

I'm such a bad singer, that our boss, Tom Bigby, has banned me from signing on the air. But if I were a contestant on "American Idol," Paula Abdul would say good things about my singing. She says good things about everybody's singing. Seemed like getting paid $8 million per year for that wasn't such a bad gig. Why is she walking away?

I Love Fenway Park. You can just feel the tradition when you go there. But my favorite ball park is the one in Pittsburgh. To me, that's the best venue in all of professional sports. Great view of the bridges and rivers from the stands.

Aug 9th

It all starts tonight.
At first I can't get enough of it -- I'll watch it all.
At the end I hate it and can't watch any of it.
It sucks. It's great. It's pre season NFL football.

Aug 8th

In order my three favorite Detroit sports announcers of all time are:
1. George Kell -- l liked everything about the way Kell did the Tigers broadcast.
2. Bruce Martin -- awesome voice -- great announcer.
3. Ernie Harwell -- one of the best people in the buisness and one of the best radio play-by-play men of all time.

If I was making my top four George Blaha would make the list.

August 6

The most underrated Detroit-area bands of all-time are The Rationals and The Dirtbombs. "Motor City Baby" by the Dirtbombs is one of the favorite songs. Mick Collins is a legend as far as I'm concerned.

August 3rd

FYI it's a long shot that Matt Stafford will be the Lions starting QB for

the opener in New Orleans.

I put the odds at 4-1 that it will be D.Cullpepper.
Who wants some of that action?

August 2

Is golf a sport? Those who say it isn't claim it can't be because you can't pull a hamstring easily playing golf. Now golf cart driving can be dangerous. Don't believe it? Ask Lions wide receiver Bryant Johnson, who was recently injured driving a golf cart. Does that make it a sport?

I just ate a Coney. It was really good. So I ate another Coney. It was even better. To me, a Coney is to food what Jimi Hendrix was to the guitar. Perfection.

July 28th

Rich Rod says that we will all be ticked if UM doesn't go to a bowl game this year.
If by ticked he means that almost everybody will have lost faith in him and will
want him out then ya everybody will be ticked.

July 27

Matt Millen said today he has "no doubt" Rich Rodriguez will get the job done at Michigan. Dennis said he wishes Matt Milen would "keep his mouth shut." I don't blame Dennis. He loves Michigan football. Matt Millen just doomed Michigan football.

July 22

Pat hates The People Mover more than Mike Valenti hates John L. Smith. Me? I hate The People Mover, too, but not as much as Mike hates John L. Smith. I don't hate anything or anybody as much as Mike hates John L. Smith. Except brussel sprouts.

July 21

Three statements, a decade apart, that simply were not true.

"I did not have sexual relations with that women." - President Bill Clinton, 1998

"I'm retiring from football." Brett Favre, 2008

Can't say Chris Wilcox will be "The Answer" for the Pistons. After the Allen Iverson debacle, can anyone ever be "The Answer" for the Pistons again? Does anybody want to be? If there was ever a nickname that didn't fit...

Pat Caputo, July 16, 2009: "Dennis, I think this is the Tigers' Year." Pat says he just has a feeling. I think Pat is pretty funny sometimes.

July 15

Who deserves a Gold Glove Award more - Brandon Inge or Curtis Granderson? I say both.

July 14th

My favorite All Star moment was short lived.
1984 my favorite baseball player of all time Chet Lemon is the A.L.'s starting centerfielder!
Lemon looks cool wearing white shoes.
Chester gets a hit but then gets picked off at first.
That was it. Great while it lasted.

July 11

Brandon Inge is the most overrated athlete by Detroit fans since Bob Probert, but at least it's for the right reasons. It's because he's a good guy, not a troublemaker, which, oddly, seemed to make Probie so popular.

July 8

Carrie Underwood is following Ryan Seacrest on Twitter, but she isn't following Dennis or I. Wonder why?

July 6

Call me crazy. Fit me with a straight jacket. But there is no way, not long ago, I could have envisioned the day Carlos Pena and Brandon Inge would be contending for the last spot on the All Star team. What's next? Nick Sheridan, All-Big Ten QB? Drew Stanton, Pro Bowler. Amir Johnson, NBA All Star?

July 5th

As everybody prepares to drive home after the holiday weekend.
I will be driving north tonight.

Just loaded my Phil Steele 09 College Football Preview into my bag.

More deep thoughts in a week!

July 2nd

Everytime I see Pat at a computer now-a-days he's on twitter!

That's why some people stay away from twitter it's addicting.

Just ask Pat.

June 30

Joe Dumars has been a far, far better general manager than Matt Millen. I'm not saying he has been worse or even comparable overall. But do consider this: Like Millen, Durmars does tend to throw coaches under the bus. And who was a better second overall draft pick, Darko Milicic or Charles Rogers?

June 29th

This is the time of year if you're a college football fan that you don't want to hear or see anything about your team.
If you do it's probably from the police.
No UM or MSU news = good news

June 27

Landon Ferraro was an excellent pick for the Red Wings to lead their draft. He's a great skater. Will have time to develop in their system - a plus. Overall, they didn't get needed defensive size, which is a hint about what they'll do in the off season. Thought Colorado did exceptionally well getting Matt Duchene third overall in the opening round and Ryan O'Reilly in the second round. Both could contribute as soon as next season.

June 25th

In five years these will be the best four players out of the  2009 NBA Draft:
Blake Griffin, Tyreke Evans, Johnny Flynn and Terrence Williams.

Hope the Pistons can get one!

Two Busts: Hasheem Thabeet and Ricky Rubio

June 23

By this point, you must conclude what Brandon Inge is producing is more than just a hot start. It's obvious he is in the midst of a very good season. Knuckleheads such as myself were wrong. He shouldn't be a catcher.

June 22nd

I don't think will ever see Lucas Glover or Ricky Barnes again
in any BIG gold tourney.  They better have had some fun
while it lasted
.

June 20

Three Best Rap Lines of All Time:

1. "Making up in gold chains what you lack for brains." - Everlast

2. "Today I didn't even have to use my a.k. - I've got to say it was a good day. - Ice Cube

3. "I like big butts and I cannot lie. You other brothers can't deny." - Sir Mix-a-Lot

June 19th

My only real problem with Jim Leyland's extension is that the TIgers under Leyland in
the 2nd half always stink. First place in the standings as I type today. Now an extension and a
2nd half swoon? Hope it's different this year!

June 18th

All of this other stuff really doesn't matter about the Tigers as long as they stay
in first place.

JUne 16

Detroit Southeastern DE/LB William Gholston saying he is going to Michigan State is yet another sign the recruiting landscape in this state has slanted toward the Spartans. There was a time, as recently as two years ago, a premier recruit like this from the PSL wouldn't even consider MSU - and would end up at Michigan. Good for Mark Dantonio. Not so good for Rich Rodriguez.

June 15th

Now what and the heck am I going to do for the next two months?

I miss the post season already.

TIGERS TIME -- FULL TIME ALL THE TIME Detroit Tigers

June 13

I'm sure we'll be analyzing the Red Wings' Game 7 loss to Pittsburgh for years to come, but the bottom line is pretty simple. The Penguins played it all the way through - and let the chips fall where they may. Can the same, honestly, be said about the Red Wings?

June 12

I do believe the Red Wings must win Game 7 tonight for Chris Osgood to clinch a spot in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Do I think that's right? No, he already belongs in based on his statistics and Stanley Cup titles. But is it reality? Yes.

June 11st

At this rate the next game like this in Detroit will come around in 2063!
We better make good on this one ... You (me) may not be around
for the next one.

June 10

A Game 7 in any sport actually in Detroit happens what, oh, every five decades or so. It's been since the 1955 Stanley Cup Final vs. Montreal, actually. It's nothing to fret about, but rather to embrace. Enjoy the moment. Doesn't come around very often, that's for sure.

June 9th

What kinda of beer should I pick for the big back-to-back Stanley Cup party maybe tonight?

Did u know that the best player in this years NBA draft will be Tyreke Evans? Move up. Get him Joe!

June 8

Can you imagine if Sidney Crosby were a Red Wing and he played and acted like he has so far during the Stanley Cup Finals? The firestorm about him would be at least double what it is now. This town wouldn't protect him. It would be all over him.

June 7th

Mike Babcock respects his team, the opponent and the overall game as much as any coach I have watched over the years.
He's sweet

June 7

Without question, Terry Sawchuk remains the greatest goalie in Red Wings' history. But is there any doubt Chris Osgood is second? If the Red Wings win the Stanley Cup, and Osgood isn't awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy, it'd be a sham and a shame.

June 6

You know it's a big game in Detroit when there are a bunch of dudes outside the arena saying that the end of the world is near.

June 3

"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." - Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1933.

"Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." - John F. Kennedy, 1960.

"Welcome to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger, can I take your order?" - Kel Mitchell, 1997.

June 2

I don't even have to ask him. I just know that Scott "The Gator" Anderson was a big fan of Wang Chang. Not me. I hated Wang Chang.

June 1

I've been wondering what the song is that the Wings play at the Joe when they come out for their warm-ups. The song is pretty sweet but I didn't know what it was. I asked some dude if he knew the song and he said Springsteen. I said I know Springsteen and it's not the Boss but I'm a moron it's the Boss.
Great song!

I got the boxset of "Band Of Brothers" and watched it all last night - 10 straight hours. Best war movie I have ever seen.

Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville was born and raised in Windsor. Does that mean when the crowd at Joe Louis Arena sings the Journey song about the "boy born and raised in South Detroit," they are singing to him?

May 25th

I sure hope that Joel Quinnville stays around Chicago for a couple more seasons.

May 20

Five CDs I'm glad I don't have to live without:

1. Meteora by Linkin Park - I've listened to this CD by far more than any other. Like every song, but especially "Somewhere I Belong."

2. Johnny Cash Live at Folsom Prison - The Man in Black is timeless, especially this performance.

3. The Chronic by Dr. Dre - "Nuthin' But A G Thang" is the greatest rap song of all time.

4. Beggar's Banquet by The Rolling Stones - "Stray Cat Blues" is the most underrated rock and roll song of all time.

5. What's Going On by Marvin Gaye - "Inner City Blues" is the definitive Detroit song. Just brilliant throughout.

May 19

Pat doesn't think my Dick Vitale impersonation is very good. Myself, I think it sounds just like him and don't care what Pat thinks about it.

May 18

Joe Louis Arena is a worn down building. I am among those who feel the Red Wings need a new arena, although they won't get one anytime soon because of the flagging economy. But the one really good thing about JLA is that there isn't a bad seat in the house. I know because the press box is located in the very last row of the arena - and it is a perfectly fine seat.

May 16, 2009

Gavin Edwards, who works with Dennis and I at 97.1, The Ticket, hates pomegranates. He says they are sloppy and nasty and have no value whatsoever. I can't say whether I like pomegranates or not because I have never actually eaten one. But I must say that my favorite flavor of vitamin water is pomegranate.

Honestly, where is the love for The Mule. You'd think the way he is a scoring machine in the playoffs, there'd be nothing but "Mule" t-shirts out there. Best nickname currently in sports, as far as I'm concerned.

May 12th, 2009

Has any team in history ever had a year as bad as the Pistons did this year. Think about it. Has any team ever had to endure the following: A horrendous trade which saw the team leader skip town, the owner dies, the beloved coach dies and the economy goes into the toilet. I know there is a lot of cap room, but the ownership void and the economy has me wondering what will happen in the next few years in Pistonland.

May 12th, 2009

Did you ever go to a restaurant and just get appetizers? It's awesome.

May 12th, 2009

I was thinking of getting some friends together to buy in on a pool. The entry fee would be $100. For $100 you get to purchase your choice (first come, first served) of AFC teams that you think the Lions would play someday if they ever get to a Super Bowl. All the money goes into an aggressive growth fund. You could buy in on expansion teams. If the Lions ever get to a Super Bowl, the owner of the team they play gets the pot. If you die, you can leave your franchise to your next of kin.
